Animal facilities/collections The animal facility houses a large live collection of blind mole rats of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies: ~250 individuals of S. galili, S. golani, S. carmeli, and S. judaei caught in nature across Israel (housed in 4 rooms, each with one of the four species). The animal facility is used for research programs in genetics, molecular biology, cytogenetics, morphology, physiology, and behavior. The collection is also used for cloning medically important genes related to hypoxia tolerance (e.g., Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, Neuroglobin, Hemoglobin, Haptoglobin, Myoglobin), biological clock genes underlying circadian rhythms (Clock, MOP3, Per 1,2,3, Cryptochrome 1,2, Tim), and aggression-related genes (Serotonin receptors, Monoamine Oxidase, among others).

Plant facilities/collections The plant facilities include a greenhouse with computerized control of climatic conditions (100 m²), three climatic chambers for maintaining the seed collections, a few growth chamfers, and a small experimental agricultural field at the University of Haifa campus(~ 1,000 m²).The IOE possesses large a collection of genetically and agronomically evaluated accession of old world plant species: (i) wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides (3,500 genotypes, 37 populations from Israel and Turkey); (ii) eleven species of Aegilops (2,800 genotypes from 137 populations in Israel, Turkey, and Russia); (iii) wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum (3,500 genotypes, 122 populations from Israel, Jordan, Turkey, and Iran); (iv) wild lettuce, Lactuca serriola, L. saligna and several other species (4,000 genotypes, 200 populations and 18 countries in Asia, Europe, and America); (v) wild oat, Avena sterilis (1,000 genotypes from 38 populations in Israel).

Mushrooms and microfungi IOE has established and maintains a large collection of higher basidiomycetes (1,500 strains and 500 species from the entire glob) and soil micromycetes (450 species from across Israel, including 77 species from the hypersaline Dead Sea). Most species and populations were collected with a record of their ecological background, permitting extensive ecological-genetic and genomic evolutionary studies.

Paleobotanical collection Paleobotanical depository was organized in 2009, accommodating collections from Israel and neighboring countries, as well as the comparative materials from central Asia, Far East and elsewhere. The paleobotanical materials contain a wealth of information on the history of vegetation and evolution of plants, as well as on climates, environmental change, habitats of ancient animals and humans, plant - animal interactions, and the whole ecosystem development through time.

Equipment Molecular biology laboratories: fully equipped laboratory including: PCRs, electrophoresis equipment, image analyzer, phosphor-imager etc. Infrastructure: Automated sequencer (ABI 3130XL) for large scale sequencing or fragment analysis; Real Time PCR; electroporation system, Isotope lab (including hybridization oven, X-RAY developing machine); basic facilities such as centrifuges, spectrophotometer, -80°C deep freezers, incubators, and growth chambers.
