Fungi / Algae Diversity, Biotechnology & BioMedicine

The biodiversity of various species of organisms is a passport characteristic of the territory in which it was studied. While the diversity of plants and animals in Israel is fairly well studied, lower plants such as soil fungi, algae, cyanobacteria, and lichens have not yet been sufficiently studied. Particular attention should be paid to the study of protected natural areas, of which there are more than two hundred on the territory of Israel, including the only Biosphere Reserve in the Middle East, "Mount Carmel". The IoE hosts specialists that conduct biodiversity research in these protected areas.
